ICF<\/strong> defines<\/strong> COACHING <\/b>as partnering <\/span>with clients in a thought-provoking and <\/span><\/em>creative process <\/span><\/strong>that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential<\/em>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Coaching helps clients to define and\u00a0<\/span>take action toward the realization of their visions, goals or desires<\/span>. Professional coaching uses a\u00a0<\/span>process of inquiry<\/strong> and personal discovery<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to build the client\u2019s level of awareness and responsibility and provides the client with structure, support and feedback.<\/p>\n

The COACH <\/strong>does not work on the “problem<\/u>” that the client brings, but works on the client<\/u>, on his or her “mindset,” that complex system of beliefs, desires and reasonings that, to date, slow him down so that they become functional to the results he wishes to achieve. The coach does not investigate the causes<\/u> that led him to his current situation, but observes<\/strong> and reflects the client’s way of “functioning” in relation to his aspirations. In the mind of the coach there is no idea of “fixing<\/u>” something or someone, but there is the idea of EXPANDING<\/span> <\/strong>perceptions and reasoning and enabling the individual to let his or her full potential FLOURISH<\/strong><\/span>. Coaching, rather than INformation<\/strong><\/span>, <\/strong>provides opportunities for deep TRANSformation<\/strong><\/span>, broadening perspectives, shifting points of view<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Each of us already possesses everything we need<\/strong> to achieve a fully satisfying life… the point is that aspirations, beliefs and desires are limited by experience and are influenced by context, which sometimes leads us far away from our Essence and the full expression of our Daimon<\/strong><\/em>, the intimate talent that knows perfectly the Way<\/em> to our full realization<\/span>. Through the coaching process, the CLIENT <\/strong>gains greater awareness about his or her desires<\/u>, learns <\/span>about and guides<\/u> his or her mental processes<\/u> so that they accompany (rather than hinder) his or her goals, clarifies the direction<\/u> to take, and finally defines concrete actions (or “non-actions”)<\/u> to move forward.<\/p>\n

DIFFERENCES<\/strong> PSYCHOTHERAPY vs COACHING<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

  • In the therapeutic approach<\/strong>, generally the PROBLEM is at the center of the helping relationship and the psychotherapist<\/span>, <\/span>expert in that problem, guides the process in the healing direction<\/span>, based on the reference theory (psychodynamic, relational-systemic, cognitive-behavioral, etc.) he has chosen to explain the cause-and-effect relationships<\/span> of the problem. At <\/span>basis there is the idea of a “fault” that needs to be fixed and <\/span>that its causes need to be understood, so that it can be processed, then overcome and thus solve<\/span> the upstream problem.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • In the developmental approach<\/strong> of coaching, the CLIENT is at the center of the relationship<\/span><\/span>, he is not to be “fixed,” and is he <\/span> the self-expert<\/span>. The COACH, <\/span>for his part, <\/span>is skilled in active listening<\/span> and questioning<\/span>. He does not guide the process, has no explanatory theories to refer to, but follows<\/span> the client by accompanying him on his journey, illuminating his every step with the <\/span>“<\/span>lighthouse<\/span>” of awareness. An awareness that comes to him from the <\/span>being able to look at himself in a perfectly clean mirror, which a good coach knows how to be. The coach does not delve into the causes of discomfort, because he does not <\/span>consider it essential to shift your gaze to what you really want, that is, to determine and then choose<\/span>, the results to be achieved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Understanding the causes can offer relief in the immediate term because our minds structurally need <\/span>“cognitive closure<\/em>,” that is, to understand <\/span>the why of events<\/span>. However, this understanding does not always foster the creative energy<\/span> that is <\/span>needed to glimpse an alternative vision<\/span>. Looking back at the past, in fact, continually brings it back to the surface, nailing us to it and preventing us from proceeding toward our own blossoming. To become who we are, we need to recover the ability to think in a<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>free way, to imagine, without the constraints of experience<\/strong>. Certainly not to make the same mistakes again, but <\/span>to access what we really, intimately wish to realize and with which, over time and overpowered by events, we have lost touch.<\/span><\/p>\n
